Mah Jongg Info

Sorry for not sending this sooner!

We have a new Mah Jongg Meet-Up that is going to meet every Wednesday from 12-2 PM in the Community Rooms for the spring quarter. This is a drop-in program, no registration required; it is our (RPL’s) program. The groups can bring their own sets or they can check out one of the four sets we have at the Research and Reader Services Desk.

These four sets are available to check out at the Research and Reader Services Desk any time we are open to be used in the library for in-house mah jongg play.

We also have 1 set available to bring home via the Library of Things.

The next time we are offering Mah Jongg instruction will be in June.

Downstairs Storage

Dina very diligently cleared out the storage closet on the Ground Floor. As of right now, the following departments have their sections clearly labeled:

  • FRPL
  • Food Pantry
  • Local History
  • Borrower Services/Display
  • Teen
  • Children’s
  • OESJ

If you are adding to the Storage Closet (there’s still space!), please clearly label your section and do not block bookshelves that have someone else’s supplies on them.

As a gentle reminder, the Storage Closet is a place to store usable items; if something is broken or needs to be thrown out, there should be a timeline or plan in place before storing it downstairs. Teen and Children’s use the room regularly to grab things, so keeping it clear of trash and large items is helpful for all of us.

Be a leader in the TikTok universe?

We are looking for someone from R&R or Collection Services to lead TikToks downstairs for other departments.

We want to make the library as a whole seem fun, approachable, and easygoing. This is a part of the Communications rebranding where we focus on the more human side of the library.

Will this add to your workload? Only a little! Filming, editing, and posting only takes about an hour out of my week. You would be in charge of coming up with the video idea, gathering volunteers, directing, editing, and posting. If you like the internet and laughter, it is actually a really fun part of the job.

There’s also no pressure to this. You can be as silly and goofy as you want.

I’ll set up a training with anyone who is interested.

Here’s some examples:

This is an idea that we came up with (not a trend)

This a trend that we did before it was overdone

Lip sync videos are always really popular and can be related to library things

App for Avid Readers

Some of you might already know about this, so apologies for being five years late to the game! If you’re annoyed with Goodreads and want to try something new and exciting, I am really enjoying StoryGraph, which came highly reviewed from other librarians. You can download your entire Goodreads library to the app so it has all your info, and then it keeps statistics for you on your genres, how fast you read, your various author preferences, etc.

They listen to feedback and are working on setting up a widget to add to email signatures and adding a social media feature to share titles that way, too.

Taunya, Our Wellness Unicorn

If you were here on Wednesday from 2 PM to 4 PM, you might have seen Taunya, our Public Safety Clinician dressed in a unicorn costume. Why? Because she owns one and wanted to make a TikTok highlighting her services, and we could not say no to that! So here is that TikTok. Enjoy!

It’ll be posted on our socials (Instagram and Facebook) next Tuesday in preparation for our 116th Wellness Wednesday.
