Buildling Alarm Information

Opening or Closing the building? Here are instruction on how to use the four-digit code assigned to you by Facilities

OPENING

  • Enter through the main entrance of the library and go straight ahead to the white alarm panel
  • Enter your four digit code followed by “1” (e.g. 00001)
  • The panel should say “Disarmed”

CLOSING

  • Make sure all emergency doors, staff room doors (includng Administration) are shut. You cannot set the alarm if any of these are open.
  • Go to the whit alarm box in the entryway vestibule
  • Enter your four digit code folled by “2” (e.g. 00002)
  • The panel should say “Away” or “System Armed”

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SET OFF THE ALARM

What happens if you accidentally set off the building alarm when you arrive in the morning?? First, don’t panic. The alarm automatically calls the police department and a custodian. Employees should just wait and explain the error to those who respond.

If you have/know your building code, try entering your code followed by “1” at either the the main security alarm keypad is in the entryway vestibule or at the secondary key pad is located at the Borrower Services Desk.

All alarms should be resolved by the police department and custodians. Even mistakes. They keep logs, stats, etc.

If you don’t know your building code, please reach out to your Department or Division Head.

Updated Emergency Response Guide

The updated Emergency Response Guide – updated as of April 2025 – is now available on the intranet. We will discuss several key points at the upcoming staff meeting.

FOR THURSDAY

Please have a printed copy at every service desk. Employees should read through this document carefully.

We do not have time to review the entire guide at the May 1 meeting, but still expect you all to be familiar with how to handle emergencies.

Library Lounge Collection

Check out RPL’s new Library Lounge collection in the staff lounge. These books and materials are meant to enhance your learning and professional development.

When you get a chance, please take a look around your workspace and at home to see if you have any materials marked “Workroom” or any other relevant items from your personal collection that you are willing to share. Suggestions are welcome!

Please drop off any materials to Meaghan C. and Andrea H.

Patron being inappropriate on phone

A male patron called today and asked for a number of book titles. The patron became inappropriate and staff hung up on them. This is okay. Do not feel that you need to stay on the line for this at all. This patron has called here and other libraries in the past for the same reason. They are being inappropriate.

Do not give your name. Forward to a supervisor if needed.  Hanging up IS an option.

Niche Academy for Staff

RPL subscribes to Niche Academy for both public and staff use. Niche is an online learning solution with ready-to-use tutorials. RPL can also use this platform to create our own learning modules for public or staff use which we hope to begin doing over the next year or so.

Employees should have access to all the tutorials. However, you will be receiving an invitation to create a Niche account so you can track and save your progress. Topics range from DEIA/Belonging and Customer Service to Safety, Collection Development, and Ethics.

In the meantime, we have gathered a collection of tutorials created by Niche and other libraries for you to look at. There is also a Niche Market with hundreds more tutorials.

Give a whirl and please send comments, questions, or issues to Amy.

RPL Professional Workroom Collection

I am working to develop a collection of professional books and materials to eventually be available for internal use by RPL employees in the staff lounge.

When you get a chance, please take a look around your offices and at home to see if you have any materials marked “workroom” or any other relevant items from your personal collection that you are willing to share to help advance the professional development of your peers.

Feel free to drop items off to me in Admin or in my mailbox.
