Thank you to Rebecca B., Meaghan C., and Alissa L. for reviewing and making corrections/suggestions to our Employee Handbook (Nov 2023 edition). There were no substantive changes. We worked to clarify certain sections and corrected some errors.
Please find time to take a look at the updated document. Popular sections include those related to timekeeping, time off, and closings.
What’s missing? What questions do you have? We welcome suggestions for the next update!
For over a year, the Reading Public Library has been forging a relationship with the Massachusett Tribe to understand the history of this land and its peoples.
The Reading Lions Club gratefully accepts used eyeglasses (no eyeglass cases). Donation boxes are located at the Town Hall, Reading Public Library (Health Nook), The Pleasant Street Center, IDeal Eye Care on Main St. and Reading Eye Assoc. on Haven St. Most schools in Reading have a collection box also. Glasses may also be dropped off at 172 Summer Ave, either in the front mail slot or on back porch.
Two new iPad kiosks in the Health Nook are set to the Health Resources page of the RPL website. There is also a new Bluetooth Health Nook Printer. Library users can print directly to this printer from the iPads. The Health Nook printer is discoverable by any Apple device so library users may accidently print to it. If that happens please let me know, I want to track it to see if it becomes an issue.
Are you ready for some shout-outs? If you’d like to submit a shout-out, fill out the form on the Forms page. Don’t be shy! Shout it out!
Shout out to everyone who participated in the all-staff mockumentaries, specifically shouting out Olivia who was the mastermind behind it all. Olivia’s directorial skills are so fly and casting was on point. From anonymous.
Shout out to Emma for going above and beyond and keeping it positive. Emma came in on her day off so we could do the first Monday storytime of the fall session together. She made a gorgeous visual schedule and helped craft & deliver a super engaging storytime routine. The kids and grown-ups got to meet both of their storytime librarians on day one, and Emma helped make everyone feel very welcome and included. It was a great way to start the week! From Ashley.
Shout out to Elizabeth for going above and beyond and for exemplary customer service. Overheard Elizabeth working with three very needy patrons in quick succession–she was so patient and cheerful!! One person said “I was so upset, but you made me smile” From anonymous.
Shout out to R&R Staff(and Desiree!) for going above and beyond and keeping it positive. Well done R&R! You (and Desiree) made it through the heat wave and tropics-level humidity with no a/c and most of your sanity intact. Susan will host the first Health Nook Info session and is tackling another messy NF collection, Rebecca is tearing through the cookbook section and covering extra hours, Elizabeth hosted a killer concert, book group, and writing workshop all in one week while still delivering to library takeout folks and the PSC! Jocelyn covered a last-minute author event, hosted trivia, crushed it on local history and genealogy one-on-one sessions, and will represent at the Read-in on the Lawn right before creating a final seed-beading community art project, Meghan welcomed teens back from summer break all while performing an awe-inspiring feat of diplomacy. This team is on fire. From the Hardly Girl Head.
Shout out to Andrea Fiorillo for going above and beyond, coming up with a new idea, leading by example, and keeping it positive. Andrea spearheaded a state-wide Read-In initiative, and right here in Reading coordinated an amazing morning of community members celebrating the Freedom to Read. We are so lucky to have her creative thinking, outstanding organizational skills, and intellectual freedom advocacy at RPL. From Ashley-and all the other grateful librarians and paralibrarians in MA.
Shout out to Louise for all her help with the New Resident Open House. She always thinks ahead to what we need and is cool as a cucumber throughout. Thanks, bunches! Michelle
If any patrons call or come in and ask if we are giving out eclipse glasses, the answer is YES! The eclipse this Saturday is likely to garner less interest than the one in April, so we don’t anticipate a lot of interest just yet.
The Communications Working Group has created a Social Media and Communications Guidelines document. This document is a living document, therefore things may change… Twitter! for example. The guidelines are located here, on the Instructions page, and saved under the Public Relations folder on the S drive. A big thank you to all the CWG for their hard work on this.

Please direct all customer inquiries/issues about the Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers to the main RMLD customer service phone at 781-942-6598. The Customer Service Team can properly record and direct the report. If off hours, that number automatically forwards to RMLD Operations Control, which is staffed 24/7.
There was a report of an issue with one of these last week. RMLD is aware and working on it.
